Harry Kane: “I’m in a totally different place” after ankle injuries

Harry Kane has revealed that working with a new personal physiotherapist has allowed him to feel “free” on the field and overcome ankle injuries that have hampered his career. Kane suffered five separate ankle ligament injuries between September 2016 and April 2019, and the ongoing issues led to the England captain tearing his hamstring on New Year’s Day 2020 while playing for Tottenham at Southampton. He didn’t play again until June of that year, during Project Restart, but he’s only missed five games due to injury since then, thanks to a personal physio. Kane declined to name the Spanish fitness coach, who was recommended to him by another athlete and spends one week of each month living with the Spurs forward. “I tore my hamstring against Southampton away on New Year’s Day in January, and since then I’ve actually found this new physio and we’ve been working together since, for nearly three years now,” Kane explained. “He’s been really great for me; we’ve worked together for hours and hours over the last three years, built a really good relationship, and I feel like he’s really helped me with my body.” I’ve noticed differences in my body in terms of how my ankles looked before and after. I’m in a completely different state. So it’s very satisfying.” [He was recommended to me] by a friend, another athlete I knew. It’s personal, away from the club, but the club is aware of his situation,” Kane added. “I’ll use him maybe once a month.” He doesn’t live in the UK, so he visits me once a month for a week.” Kane suffered ankle injuries twice in the 2016-17 season, another the following season, and two more this season, putting him in doubt for the Champions League Final in June 2019. The 29-year-old, speaking in Milan ahead of England’s Nations League match against Italy on Friday, admitted he was frustrated by the problems but claims he has never felt better than under Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte. “I wasn’t worried, but I was annoyed,” he added. “When you’re trying to put together a good season, you’re in good shape, and you consistently get the same kind of injuries… I kept getting ankle injuries, which led to a hamstring injury.” So I think as you get older and more mature, you learn more about your body and how it adapts to things, when you can push and when you shouldn’t. So you learn as you go, and I’ve definitely learned a lot about my body and myself in the last few years.” That has enabled me to consistently perform at the level I do. “I’d say [I’m the fittest I’ve ever been],” Kane added. “I’ve been in shape my entire life.” However, different coaches have different philosophies, and we worked extremely hard in pre-season; it was a difficult pre-season. I’ve made a good start. To put it simply, I’m in a good mood. I’m not sure if I’m the fittest I’ve ever been, but I feel great.”
