After hearing Gabby Agbonlahor savagely criticize Manchester United following their 4-0 defeat to Brentford on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp admitted he was “close to calling in.”
Agbonlahor described Erik ten Hag’s team’s performance as “amateur,” and he was particularly critical of United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, whom he described as the “worst possible teammate” and said he couldn’t remember “the last time he had a decent game.”
In an interview with reporters ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Old Trafford on Monday, Klopp admitted that Agbonlahor’s comments had enraged him so much that he considered calling in to complain. Jurgen Klopp slammed Gabby Agbonlahor after Manchester United’s defeat to Brentford. ‘I drove home after watching the first half here [at the training ground] and I listened to talkSPORT and Gabby [Agbonlahor],’ the former Aston Villa forward said after the game. He beat us 6-0 in my first year, so I didn’t remember him as a mentality monster on the pitch – but what he said about Manchester United in that show had me on the verge of calling in and telling him, ‘You forgot completely that you were a player.’ Klopp stated. ‘And if ex-players are leaving in this manner, you can imagine how everything else is going.’ You must consider how you want to react in a situation like this.’ The Liverpool manager’s vehement condemnation of Agbonlahor’s remarks prompted United supporters to pay tribute to the rival coach on social media. On social media, United fans reacted to Klopp’s criticism of Agbonlahor while defending their team. ‘Even Jurgen Klopp, the Manager of our bitter rivals, is defending United and owning Gabby Agbonlahor in the process,’ one tweeted. Someone had to finally stop Gabby from talking; he’ll be devastated by what JK said because he’s normally up his arse. ‘Fair play to Klopp, even though we’re bitter rivals, he can see through bullshit when it’s there, and talksport is mostly bulls***,’ said another United fan. Agbonlahor talks like he’s a football legend when, in reality, he’s a nobody.’ ‘Gabby Agbonlahor’s takes are so bad that he’s got the Liverpool manager actively defending Manchester United,’ another user added. However, some United fans saw Klopp’s comments in support of Ten Hag’s squad as an indictment of how bad things are at the club right now. ‘Even Klopp is feeling sorry for us,’ wrote @keegz2011. Another user found the situation amusing: ‘Not Klopp defending for United because they can’t do it themselves.’ @DannyUTD7 ‘You know we’re in a bad situation when even Jurgen Klopp can criticize Agbolanhor because of Manchester United,’ he said.
Bruno Fernandes was singled out by Agbonlahor for his poor performance in United’s defeat. Klopp also mentioned Liverpool’s 6-0 thrashing of Agbonlahor’s Villa in 2016.
After a winless start to the season, United will face their most difficult test of the season when they face Klopp’s Liverpool on Monday.
The capture of Real Madrid star Casemiro is set to be announced in the coming days and should lift the spirits of United fans, but the Brazil international will not be registered in time to feature against Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Though both Frenkie de Jong and Adrien Rabiot have rebuffed United’s advances, the club are still looking to bring in more new arrivals before the end of the transfer window later this month.
