Manchester United and Newcastle United in the hunt for Mauro Icardi

Manchester United and Newcastle United have reportedly been approached about signing PSG striker Mauro Icardi. According to Fabrizio Romano of Caught Offside, Mauro Icardi of Paris Saint-Germain has been offered to Premier League clubs Manchester United and Newcastle United during the current transfer window. Icardi joined PSG in the summer of 2019, initially on loan from Inter Milan, and had a successful season in France. It prompted Les Parisiens to sign him on a permanent basis in 2020, but the Argentine has gradually fallen down the club’s pecking order. Last season, he appeared in 24 Ligue 1 games, only ten of which he started. At PSG, Icardi is now considered surplus to requirements, with new manager Christophe Galtier and director Luis Campos eager to get rid of the 29-year-old. In order to do so, they appear to have offered the striker’s services to Premier League heavyweights Manchester United and Newcastle United. Manchester United is aggressively searching for a new center-forward after a disastrous start to the season. Cristiano Ronaldo’s future remains uncertain, while Anthony Martial is out with an injury and Marcus Rashford is out of form. It has left manager Erik ten Hag with no reliable option at the top, which the Red Devils intend to address as soon as possible. Icardi’s name had recently been mentioned as a potential target for Manchester United, and they have now been offered a chance to sign the Argentine international. Along with Manchester United, fellow Premier League club Newcastle United has been given the opportunity to sign the 29-year-old from PSG. Newcastle United are also looking for a new striker to partner with Callum Wilson and share the scoring load. Eddie Howe’s side has been linked with a number of players in the market, but their efforts to land their attacking targets have met with failure. Given the circumstances, Icardi has presented himself as a problem, with the 29-year-old being offered to the Magpies. However, according to Romano, neither Manchester United nor Newcastle United have made an offer for Icardi at this time. The Argentine has also been approached by Turkish giants Galatasaray. As a result, a summer move to the Premier League for the former Inter Milan captain appears unlikely.
