Memphis Depay has been linked to a move to Tottenham this summer, and if they are successful in signing the Barcelona player, it may help Chelsea in their own transfer pursuit. Sport, via Sport Witness, reports that Spurs have “formally taken the move” to sign Depay this month after the Catalan giants declared him available for trade. Spurs hope to add the Netherlands international to their roster after acquiring Clement Lenglet from Xavi’s team. And should they do so, they would be giving Chelsea a big advantage in their pursuit of Jules Kounde from Sevilla, following claims that Barcelona is also interested in the defender and has offered Depay as compensation. According to reports on Sunday, Spurs inquired about Depay’s availability this summer when finalizing a deal for Lenglet earlier this month. However, the La Liga club initially froze the 28-year-departure old’s before changing its mind and granting Antonio Conte’s team permission to speak with the player. Although Depay was made available for transfer this summer, it has been stated that he is at ease with the club and his priority is to stay at the Camp Nou. Spurs have already contacted Depay’s representatives about this. Depay’s reluctance to go back to England is also known. Spurs are only ‘willing to pay’ €17 million (£14.4 million) for the Netherlands winger, despite Barcelona demanding €20 million (£16.9 million), and it is unlikely that the Catalan club will lower its demands given the need to raise cash following the completion of the signings of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.

However, should Spurs agree to pay Barcelona’s asking price and then persuade Depay to relocate to London and rejoin the Premier League, it would not only be a wonderful financial decision for them but it might also have a significant positive impact on one of their top four competitors for this season. In order to replace Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, the latter of whom joined Barcelona on a free transfer when his contract expired last month, Chelsea is reportedly in the running to recruit Kounde from Sevilla this summer. However, despite having already signed Christensen, Barcelona is still interested in Kounde. To compete with Chelsea’s financial might in the chase for the center-back, Barcelona has reportedly offered Depay as part of a player-plus-cash deal. But if Spurs are successful in luring Depay away from the Camp Nou, it will negatively affect Barcelona’s prospects of landing a deal for Kounde, putting Chelsea in the driver’s seat to sign the French international.
